What is a car engine?

An engine is a mechanical component that is used to transmit energy to motorized vehicles. This energy is created by the combustion of fuel in a mechanical movement.

There are several types of engines that can be adapted to automobiles. However, the most used are internal combustion engines and internal combustion engines. However, there are other types of engines that can be adapted to an automobile.

What are the constituent parts of an engine?

Several elements make up an engine, each with a specific function. Gasoline engines are composed of the following elements:

Connecting rod: Acts as an intermediary between the crankshaft and the piston
Spark plugs: With electrical energy, it creates a spark to cause implosion
Carburetor: Modulates the arrival of gasoline
Cylinder head: Top of the cylinder
Cylinder: Hole into which the piston enters
Piston: Object that enters the cylinder to exert pressure
Crankshaft: Causes rotation in the cylinder

How does an engine work?

An engine almost always has the same operation regardless of the means of transport (motorcycle, car, truck, etc.). However, even if the principle is the same, the different models have different numbers of strokes, which changes the combustion method that allows the movement to be achieved. We will have an operation for gasoline engines and Diesel engines.

4-stroke operation

Most of the engines that our vehicles are equipped with are 4-stroke. 4-stroke engines have an operation divided into a series of movements. These movements are repeated one after the other.

The 1st stroke is done by the intake of air and fuel. During this first stroke, the combustion chamber receives a mixture of air and fuel from the intake.

The 2nd stroke is done by the compression of the piston. There is compression of the air and fuel mixture by the piston. This compression goes towards the spark plug with a pressure of around 30 bars.

The 3rd stroke is done by the explosion and the expansion. During this stroke, the piston comes into contact with the spark plug. An electric arc is created that promotes the ignition of the air and fuel. The power of the explosion pushes the piston down, which triggers a new cycle of mechanical movement.

The 4th stroke is the exhaust. After the ignition of the compressed air and fuel in the combustion chamber, we obtain the smoke that results from the combustion. It is also pushed back towards the exhaust manifold by the movement of the piston rising. The smoke escapes through the exhaust pipe, and vaporizes into the atmosphere.

As for the two-stroke engine

A two-stroke engine has four elements:

A cylinder with three openings:

An exhaust port communicating with the atmosphere;
A transfer port that connects the crankcase to the cylinder;
A port communicating with the carburetor for the fuel + air mixture.

A piston sliding inside the cylinder. The piston of two-stroke engines has a boss that acts as a deflector. The latter ensures that the burnt gases are swept by the fresh gases.
A connecting rod that connects the piston to the crankshaft.
A crankshaft. Its role is to transform the reciprocating movement of the piston into a rotational movement called the connecting rod-crank system. Its engine shaft composed of balancing masses is supported by bearings to limit vibrations.

Two-stroke engines have only two phases in the combustion process. Mainly reserved for motorcycles and other types of motorized two-wheelers, here is how they work.

The first stroke consists of compression, combustion, expansion and exhaust. In this system, the engine compresses the mixture of fuel, air and oil, which serve to lubricate the entire mechanism. The combustion is produced as for 4-stroke engines using a spark plug. The ejection of the piston downwards generates smoke which results from the process. This smoke will then be released through the exhaust.

The second stroke consists of intake, suction and compression. The mixture of oil, fuel and air is admitted into the combustion chamber following the suction movement created by the dynamics of the piston. The mixture is compressed again and rises towards the spark plug.
