What is a gearbox?

A mechanical or hydraulic device that vehicles and automobiles are equipped with, the gearbox allows a vehicle to move forward or backward, by transmitting engine power to the wheels through the action of a shaft or half-shaft.

All gears in the gearbox have different gear ratios or transmission ratios, which ensures that the transmission can turn.

When the transmission turns too fast, it causes engine fatigue. To prevent the speed from increasing or stagnating, the gear ratio must be increased.
When the transmission turns more slowly, the engine may stop and your vehicle may stall. In this case, you must downshift or lower the gear ratio.

What are the parts that make up a gearbox?

Several elements make up a gearbox. Among others, we distinguish:

The fork

There are many of them in a gearbox. They allow the sliding gear to move in order to engage a gear ratio.

The sliding gear

It allows the gears of the secondary shaft to be engaged or clutched. When in neutral, no gear is in dog clutch.

Synchronizer ring

It allows the speeds of the shaft and the gear on the secondary shaft to be synchronized.

Primary shaft

The latter rotates at a speed similar to that of the engine thanks to the crankshaft which connects them via the clutch.

Intermediate transmission shaft

It is located parallel to the primary shaft and is connected to the secondary shaft.

The secondary shaft

It is on this shaft that the gears of the different speeds are located.

The differential

It is located between the gearbox and the wheels. It allows the speed to be distributed between the left and right wheels.

Bearings

They allow the different shafts to rotate.

Gearbox oil

It ensures the cooling and lubrication of the different gears.

The different gearbox systems

There are several gearbox systems. We will discuss the most commonly used on the market.

Manual gearboxes with parallel gears

This is one of the most common gearbox systems in Europe. It is called parallel gear because of its series of pinions that allow it to change gears in a synchronized manner. This type works with at least 5 to 6 different gears.

Mechanical gearboxes

They consist of a primary shaft, secondary shaft and a third shaft; pinions, dogs and synchronizers which are the constituent elements of the different gears. They are also equipped with forks which connect to the control lever.

Automatic gearboxes

They are equipped with cascaded epicyclic gear trains. They are secured by clutches and brakes allowing for different gears. Here, the classic clutch of mechanical gearboxes is replaced by a hydraulic torque converter. This consists of a high-pressure hydraulic pump in the form of a first turbine. A second turbine is connected to the gearbox shaft. A stator is used to manage the oil flow. Instead of a torque converter, some current automatic transmissions use a dual clutch.

A computer fully controls the gear change in the dual-clutch automatic transmission. Another gear is only engaged when the rotation speed of the receiving shaft is close to that of the drive shaft to limit wear on the clutches, their size and the gears to be used.

Robotic gearboxes

This is a combination of mechanical and automatic transmissions. The user therefore benefits from the automation of mechanical and manual mode through the gear change and paddles that are installed on the steering wheel.

They are effective for small cars with low-power engines. Their system was perfected in the early 2000s. Moving from slow operation to a dual clutch, electronic management, faster in terms of gear changes. Robotic gearboxes are now the equipment of powerful cars.
