The torque converter is a mechanism used in automatic transmissions to replace the clutch and provide the connection between the transmission and the engine.

The transmission of torque from the engine to the gearbox is carried out using the torque converter. Adaptation to the power and characteristics of the different engines is achieved by implementing different converter versions. They are distinguished by their dimensions (volume), conversion factor, conversion characteristic, torsion damper and differential control version.

Torque converter in standard exchange

The torque converter or hydraulic torque converter is an essential element of your vehicle's gearbox. Equipped with a manual or automatic mode, your vehicle will always have in its gearbox, a torque converter linked to the gearbox but also to the clutch. It serves as a connection between the engine and the gearbox.

The torque converter is not found on robotized gearboxes.

In some torque converters, a bridging clutch is integrated. It allows at high speed to have a mechanical engine-gearbox connection. The latter then eliminates the loss of efficiency linked to their operation.

Torque converter: how does it work?

A torque converter has at least three rotating shafts, namely: the engine shaft; a turbine (it acts on the load to be moved); and finally the turbine body (it is interposed between the engine shaft and the turbine and prevents the oil from returning to the engine.) Some conventional torque converters have a built-in turbine body, preventing its rotation. This is why it is called a stator in English. In practice, it is mounted on a non-return ratchet. Its role is to block its rotation only in the opposite direction to that of the engine shaft.

This basic structure has regularly undergone modifications, especially when it was necessary to find an exceptional gear ratio. This was done by connecting several turbines. Each set of turbines thus corresponded to a given torque gear ratio. We can cite the example of Buick's Dynaflow automatic transmission to better illustrate this.

A form of transmission used in General Motors Buick cars, the Dynaflow is a classic design which, under normal conditions, only uses a converter to gear the torque. However, this converter was equipped with five elements including two turbines, two stators, a planetary gear providing two forward speeds in addition to reverse, allowing it to perform a sufficient reduction to propel large cars.

The hydraulic converter is a component mounted on automatic gearboxes with epicyclic gears and serves as their clutch.
It is equipped with two fans:

The first, the impeller, is connected to the engine.
The second, the turbine, is connected to the transmission input shaft.

Any movement of the turbine will move your vehicle unless the transmission is in neutral or Park mode.

Not using air, the torque converter uses a liquid that is not compressed. This is transmission oil. In order for the vehicle to move, it is necessary for the engine to be connected to the rear wheels.

The torque converter has a very strong circular housing shape that contains three components, namely: the pump, the turbine and the reactor.

The pump

It is of the centrifugal type. It is when it turns that the transmission oil is projected outwards to allow more liquid to enter its center.

The turbine

The transmission oil infiltrates the blades of the turbine which, being linked to the transmission, will allow it to turn and thus promote the movement of the vehicle.

The reactor

It is located in the middle of the converter and allows the liquid to be rerouted from the turbine to the pump, this guarantees optimal efficiency of the torque converter and allows the engine to turn.

What are the symptoms of a broken torque converter?

The torque converter can wear out over time and with use. This can of course cause malfunctions in your vehicle and its performance.

A faulty converter can present the following symptoms:

Shrill noises when you drive your vehicle;
Vibrations when you drive between 50km/h and 70km/h that disappear when you accelerate;
Repetitive engine jerks can affect the quality of your driving;
Increased fuel consumption;
Regular speed problems.

Testing a torque converter

Testing a torque converter requires following several steps. It is recommended to first check all the fluids in your vehicle. An oil change will be done if some fluids have lost their viscosity.

If the fluids are in good condition, you will need to have a diagnostic case that will allow you to start the torque converter test.
Here is the procedure:

Lock the wheels of your vehicle and apply the handbrake;
Press the brake pedal as hard as possible;
Start your engine;
Press the accelerator pedal for a maximum of 3 seconds;
Read the fault code on the diagnostic case.
