What is a petrol engine?

Due to the type of fuel it uses, the spark ignition engine or petrol engine is a so-called internal combustion engine. It can be reciprocating, i.e. two or four strokes, and rotary.

During operation, the combustible mixture of a petrol engine does not ignite spontaneously unlike the diesel engine. It is under the action of a spark that the spark plug causes this ignition.

The petrol engine is equipped with a complete ignition system. This system is composed of:

A spark plug through which the electric arc ignites the gases in the combustion chamber;
A coil that allows the production of high voltages useful for creating the spark;
An ignition control system also called a breaker or electronic system.

It is a system capable of ensuring the transformation of the heat energy contained in gasoline into mechanical energy necessary for the movement of a vehicle. The characteristics of an engine are:

its torque or moment;
the maximum power that it can provide;

These two principles also lead to two effects:

The engine's torque determines the recovery in a given gear and the acceleration;
The power guarantees the vehicle's top speed.

Using a gasoline engine requires 4-stroke combustion using valves.

What is the operating principle of a gasoline engine?

A gasoline engine uses the 4-stroke combustion cycle.

The first stroke involves the admission of fresh gases. The opening of the valve allows the piston to suck in air as it descends. The carburetor allows indirect injection of gasoline into the intake area, which results in a gas mixture called carbureted. For direct injection, the gasoline is vaporized in the cylinder or cylinder head.

The second stroke is for compression. The piston must rise to strongly compress the concentrated gas mixture in the cylinder and then the cylinder head, after the intake has closed.

The third stroke is made up of ignition, combustion and expansion. Here, the spark plug creates a spark and its heat ignites the pre-compressed gas mixture when the piston reaches top dead center. This allows combustion to reach temperatures of over 1000 °C. The pressure being too high, the piston will be pushed back to its bottom dead center. This causes the crankshaft to make a half-turn through its connection by the connecting rod articulated on two pivots. This is the only important engine stroke.

The fourth stroke devoted to the exhaust. The rotational inertia allows the crankshaft to drive the piston from BDC to its TDC through the connecting rod. The valve opens shortly before bottom dead center, causing the exhaust gases to be evacuated, this prevents their parasitic compression. This is the exhaust opening advance (EOA).

What is the environmental impact of the gasoline engine?

Urban journeys are very polluting in carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned carcinogens (HC) because of gasoline engines. However, they are low in fine particles (PM). Direct injection is more polluting than Diesel combustion in carbon monoxide.
