Manual gearboxes (BMP)

A manual gearbox BMP is a robotized automatic gearbox distributed on Citroën models and manufactured by PSA.

It is equipped with two robots that control the clutch and gear engagement. The gearbox itself decides to engage a gear or change gear depending on the pressure exerted on the brake or accelerator. Driving becomes easier because the driver does not worry about the clutch and gears, but only the brake, accelerator and steering wheel as with a classic automatic gearbox.

Robotic gearboxes

Robotic gearboxes are also very current. It is a type of automatic transmission which, unlike a classic automatic gearbox, is a mechanical gearbox equipped with an electronically controlled clutch. The latter performs a clutch-release maneuver instead of the driver. This type of transmission has more than one advantage:

This type of transmission was developed by the Audi TT 3.2 V6 in 2005, then highly sought after by super-sports cars, because of its speed and efficiency.

It was the Volkswagen group that was the first to democratize the robotic transmission through Audi at the end of the 90s, under the name DSG or Dual Shift Gearbox. Today, some of these boxes are calibrated to consume less. Regular maintenance of the automatic servomotor is recommended to guarantee its robustness and durability.

Continuously variable transmissions

You have probably already heard of CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) or continuously variable transmissions. This transmission system is an alternative to the automatic gearbox where all operations are carried out without the intervention of the driver.

The CVT has only one gear unlike the automatic gearbox which can have 6, 8 or even 10 gears. The latter varies according to demand. This type of transmission is perfectly suited to all types of vehicles, whether cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs), front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicles. This type of transmission (CVT) can also be combined with a hybrid or plug-in hybrid engine.

This type of transmission (CVT) has undergone an evolution without the need for a clutch called infinite variable transmission (IVT). Thanks to this device, the transmission can switch from forward to reverse gear through a neutral point continuously.
